The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS) is a language proficiency test developed by the Yunus Emre Institute in accordance with the proficiency definitions set forth in the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" to measure the reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills of individuals learning Turkish as a foreign or second language. It has been administered internationally three times a year since 2013, simultaneously in Turkey and all countries where Yunus Emre Institutes are located.
The Turkish Proficiency Exam (TYS), developed by the Yunus Emre Institute, has received ALTE (The Association of Language Testers in Europe) approval (Q-mark), becoming the first internationally validated language exam for Turkish. Measuring and evaluating individuals' proficiency in Turkish reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills with validated and reliable measurement tools is of great importance. The TYS, as a standardized exam for Turkish with international validity, aims to standardize teaching in different institutions teaching Turkish abroad. The Turkish Proficiency Test (TYS) is of great importance in increasing the interest of foreign students in Turkey, facilitating the acceptance of their job and education applications, and ensuring a more solid evaluation process.
The TYS is conducted in three sessions. The sections in the 1st and 2nd sessions (reading, listening, writing) are group exams; the section in the 3rd session (speaking) is administered separately for each candidate. The entire exam lasts 180 minutes: 105 minutes for the first session, 60 minutes for the second, and 15 minutes for the third. Candidates who pass the exam are awarded a Turkish Proficiency Certificate at B2 and C1 levels, depending on their scores. The Turkish Proficiency Certificate, which has the ALTE Quality Mark (Q-mark), is the first internationally recognized language proficiency certificate for Turkish. Candidates holding a Turkish Proficiency Certificate are exempt from attending a Turkish preparatory class when they gain admission to any institution in Turkey. In addition, a Turkish Proficiency Certificate is required from foreigners who wish to work as Turkish language teachers, guides, or translators. A Turkish Proficiency Certificate provides individuals with a significant advantage in job applications.
